How well do you keep your New Year resolutions? New research reveals the secret.

Beyond the Orphanage

Although around half of us have said that we’ll be making a New Year resolution this year, chances are that a lot of these won’t stumble past February. There’s got to be a secret to keeping our resolutions, right?! BT Group recently conducted a study that might have found an answer.

The BT Group research showed that more than a quarter of respondents were more likely to keep their New Year’s resolutions when it involved a charitable cause. The research showed that likelihood to keep resolutions applied whether that involvement involved direct giving, volunteering, or fundraising.

Here at Beyond the Orphanage, we’ve personally seen the profoundly positive effect of giving. Our volunteers can testify to that. It makes sense: deeply feeling a cause provides a reason to have determination when it comes to your resolution. Seeing the affects of your resolution in the lives of other people is incredibly compelling.

A December 2016 report from personal finance website WalletHub explained that caring is one of the most intimate and human ways to connect with others. ‘Caring’ in this context can be expressed in many ways – from helping an elderly person across the street to fighting a house fire.

That’s an important point.

We’d love you to hold a fundraising event with us or sponsor one of our children. But we’re also huge advocates of commitments as simple as waking up each morning with the intent to care about and think of others.

As Goran Persson once famously said, “Let our New Year resolution be as simple as this: we will be there for one another as fellow members of humanity, in the finest sense of the word”.
