Empowering independence: BTO’s founding principles

Hannah Smith

In order for Beyond the Orphanage (BTO) to remain focused on empowering children towards independence, it is crucial for us to reflect on our organisation’s mission each and every day.

Our mission: To partner with, empower and equip local community organisations to provide vulnerable children with a safe place to grow and thrive.

Founded on the belief that every child deserves not just care, but also the opportunity to thrive independently, our organisation has remained steadfast in its commitment to nurturing self-sufficiency and empowerment.

Since its inception, BTO has worked with local community partners to ensure vulnerable children are given every opportunity to become independent, striving to create an environment where children are encouraged to dream big and pursue their aspirations.

One of the cornerstones of our approach is education. We firmly believe that education is the most powerful tool for unlocking doors of opportunity. By investing in quality education, we not only empower children to envision a brighter future but also provide them with the knowledge and skills to turn those dreams into reality.

We want the children in our programs to have the confidence to navigate life’s challenges and make informed decisions, which is why we place a strong emphasis on life skills development, including digital literacy, vocational training, and emotional resilience building.

Moreover, we recognise that the journey toward independence is not a solitary one. Thanks to the support of this community, we have been able to champion independence and not only the children, but our in-country partners.

Thank you for being part of the BTO community and helping us make this possible.
